Welcome to the AISC's Athletic Wiki space.
I am Coach Gabriel and I'll be the Head Coach of the Boys Basketball team for the year 2012-2013
Basketball at AISC: Basketball is a very popular sport at AISC. A lot of boys and girls are trying out for the teams and many, many others play during breaks in the gym and the covered area. The boys had a great year in 2007-8 when they finished in 4th place during the SAISA tournament, the highest in the young history of our school, with Mr. Frank Gardner (IT High School) as the head coach.
In 2009-10, with Mr. Gabriel as the head coach and Mr. Gardner as the assistant, the team finished in 6th place at the SAISA tournament. The 2010-11 (Mr. Gabriel, head coach, Mr. Fitzhugh, assistant coach), year brought some more success for the young Raptors who captured the third place trophy at the SAISA tournament held in Chennai. Not only our young players had the best year in school's history but they also broke several records along the way. Their 11-4 record was a complete reverse from the 5-9 record the previous year. Co-Captain guard Sparsh had 145 points for the season with 35 three pointers and was instrumental for the success of the team. Small forward Gun Woo with 110 points and point guard Jun Ha with 97 were also part of the great push during the final stages of the tournament. Small forward Harish with his outstanding performance during the third place game vs Lincoln (tied the game with 30 seconds to go and scored all 5 points of the team in overtime) along with his 67 points. Guards Aren (79 points), co-captain Sean (49) and Dae Keyong (47) all contributed to a magestic year. Seok Hyun, Manyu and Jun Kyn were the support players of the team.
The 2011-12 (Mr. Gabriel, head coach, Mr. Fitzhugh, assistant coach), season had some great moments ( first place in the AISCH Invitational Tournament) but also a dissapointing 4th place in SAISA. Although the team had great plans for the tournament in Colombo, Sri Lanka, a couple of injuries didn't allow our players to have the strongest team on the floor for the SAISA tournament. The season ended with a 14-7 record but with many individual and team new records. Bryce (center) had a team record 236 points and 47 steals, Aren (guard) was second in scoring with 210 points, Shravan (power forward) had 116 rebounds to go with his 136 points. As a team the Raptors had a total of 902 points, 528 rebounds and 230 steals, all team records. Average points for per game 42.9 and against 32.4. The points allowed (681 in 21 games was a team best for our defense). The rest of the team: Dong Joon (guard), Harish (small forward), Kevin (guard), Manyu (power forward), Calder (guard), Seok Hyun (guard/small forward), Danush (small forward) and Kethan (center).
Coach Gabriel and Coach Thomson are the coaches of the 2013 Boys' Varsity Basketball Team. After two weeks of practices the following 12 players were selected by the coaches: Max (freshman), Calder, Bryce, Kethan, Deek, Ludovic and Jordan (sophomores), Jake,Manyu (juniors) and Shravan, Kevin and Rahul (seniors)
The 2013 season started with a victory over a small team from Santhom. Although Santhom was the best team we competed against last year, this is not the case in 2013. The final score was 81-25 for the Raptors. High scorers were Bryce with 28 points, Shravan with 17 and Calder with 14. Bryce was the top rebounder with 10. On Tuesday, January 22 our team will play host to Lady Andal.
Another easy victory for the Raptors on Tuesday night over a young Landy Andal team. The final score was 91-8 . Captain Shravan was the top scorer (17 points). Bryce added 16 and Calder14. Shravan was the top rebounder with 10. Next game vs Don Bosco on Friday.
Our Raptors made it 3 for 3 last Friday with a hard fought victory over Don Bosco. Although not very tall, the quick and experienced visiting team gave our players a very good game. The final score was 54-51. Bryce with 19 points and Shravan with 18 were the top scorers. Both of these player were the top rebounders with 10 each. Next game is on Tuesday vs MTCM.
The game on Tuesday vs a quick and skillful team from MCTM was outstanding. Both teams played solid defense and attacked the baskets. After a low scoring first half (14-24 for the guest team), our young Raptors had an explosive third quarter going up 27-26, outscoring their opponents 13-2. However, the more experienced local team came back in the fourth quarter and won the game by a score of 43-35. The game was tied at 32 with only two minutes to go, but the long range shots from the sharp shooters of MCTM put the game away with 56 seconds to go.Shravan with 14 points and 10 rebounds was our top scorer and rebounder. Next game is on Tuesday, February 5, vs St. Peter's.
St.Peter's came to town and took care of business. A quick, tall and agile visiting team played all types of basketball (zone, half-court press, traps and man-to-man). Our young player kept up with them and even finished on top on each of the first three quarters (11-8, 20-17 and 36-32). However, the more experienced and skillful team from St. Peter's came up on top with a score of 52-46. Bryce was our top scorer with 17 points while Shravan was the king of rebounds with 10. Both myself and coach Thomson decided to invite schools who have better teams than ours so we can prepeare our team for the SAISA tournament. Next game is on Friday, February 8 vs St. Michael's
On Friday, our team played a young but skillful squad from St.Michael's. From the get go, our Raptors showed their desire to win the game. The final score was 76-21. Bryce was the top scorer with 23 points, while Shravan again was the top rebounder with 11. We have a game on Tuesday and then we finish the week with our local invitational tournament on Friday and Saturday (round-robin) and on the following Tuesday the play-offs.
We have a scheduled friendly game vs Don Bosco (the first time we played them we won a very close contest-54-51) on Tuesday, Feb.12. On Friday, Feb. 15 we open the Invitational AISC Tournament. Our first game is vs St. Michael's at 3:45 in the Raptordome. The game vs Don Bosco had all the elements of a great high school basketball game; speed, attacking moves, back and forth baskets and many leads in the score from both teams. After a 12-12 first quarter the visitors closed the half leading 30-21. Our young Raptors played great in the third quarter and reduced the defecit to 38-41. However the sharp shooters from Don Bosco (they had 7 three pointers) took over in the fourth quarter and finished the game 60-54. Bryce with 19 points was the top scores for AIS-Chennai, while Shravan was the leading rebounder with 9.
The AISC Basketball Invitational started with a big BANG last Friday and Saturday. Our young Raptoors won all their games and in the process defeated the only two teams they had lost to this season, St. Peter's and MTCM. Firday's game vs St. Michael's was a good warm up for the following day. Our young players played well and won 66-35. The first of three games on Saturday was against the quick and talanted team from St. Peter's. After a slow start (16-16 in the first quarter), our defense took over and kept the opponents to just 29 points for the game. Final score 60-29. The second game of the day was vs Lady Andan (who filled in for a team that did not come). In that game all our eleven players had the chance to score. Final score:79-11. The last game of the day was against one of the best teams we played this season, MTCM. With great defense and excellent, aggressive offense we won the game 47-34. The game was over at the end of the third quarter when the score jumped to 38-22 for the Raptors. In the Championship game next Tuesday we will be playing MTCM again after they defeated St. Peter's 67-62 in the semifinal. In the four games we played, we scored 252 points and allowed only 109. Top scorer in those games was Bryce with 82 points and top rebounder was Shravan with 30. Both coaches, are very pleased with the way our young players have developed their skills over the last six weeks. We believe that with another few practices we'll be ready for the SAISA Tournament coming up in early March.
The 2013 AISC Invitational Basketball Tournament found the Chennai Raptors, Champions again for this year. After defeating the two strongest teams of the tournament in the round robin (St. Peter's 60-29 and MCTM 47-34) our young team ( three sophomore starters) won the championship game over MCTM with a score of 35-34. Although MCTM came with a great half court plan to stop us from attacking the basket, we were able to score almost at will and stay with the quicker MCTM team. At the end it was Deek who came through and scored the final basket with a few seconds left on the clock. Deek was our high scorer with 10 points, while Shravan and Bryce both had 5 rebounds. Our game record is 9-3. We'll have a practice game on Tuesday so players who didn't play much throughout the season can have a chance to perform and then we are off to Nepal for the SAISA tournament between March 8-10.
The game on Tuesday night vs St.Michaels' was the final contest before our trip to Nepal. Our players had a very good game and won 56-24. Although the scoring in the first quarter was low (5-5), we played great defense the rest of the game and were ahead in all quarters (22-11 in the second and 37-14 in the third). Kevin was our top scorer with 28 points and Rahul was our top rebounder with 11. The final stats for the domestic season are the following: Games won-lost10-3, points for-against780-427, average points for-against60.0-32.8, total rebounds423,average rebounds per game, 32.5.
Coach Gabriel and Coach Thomson would to congratulate the team for a great local season and wish them the best in SAISA.
The trip to Kathmandu did not go well. Although we started with the best possible way, defeating Lincoln School (41-31), Lahore (56-19) and Muscat (29-20), we lost to Karachi in the crossover and took ourselves out of the top four teams of the tournament. You can call it bad luck, or lapse of concentration, or fatique, or all of the above, but we only managed a 7th palce finish in SAISA 2013. This was not what we had in mind before we left for Nepal, but now all of us know and understand the importance of fighting for every rebound and play good defense in all games.
The final Stats for the 2013 season: Games Played: 19, Games Won: 14, Points For: 1023 and Points Against: 583. Average Points Per Game:53.8 and Average Points Against 30.7. Top Scorer was Bryce with 275 points which is a school best and Top Rebounder was Shravan with 109 rebounds, also a school best.
