The season runs from August-October.
Boys' Coach: Mr. Kostas Gabriel, Assistant Coach: Mr. Ron Thomson
Welcome to the Volleyball page of the AISC's Athletic Wiki space.
My name is Coach Gabriel and I am the Head Coach of the Boys Volleyball Team for the year 2012-2013. Our new assistant coach is Mr. Thomson (Middle School P.E.)
We have just finished our local game schedule. Tonight (Wednesday, Sept.26) we defeated a strong team from Guruculam 2 sets to 0 (25-13, 25-22). We are going to have a short practice on Friday and then one on Tuesday (Oct.2) before we travel to Dhaka on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
At this moment I would like to thank my friend and co-coach Mr. Thomson for his valuable contribution to the team and give all my players a big hug for the season. Long hours of practices and the weekend tournament did not stop our young Raptors from having a great season. Whatever happens in Dhaka, I am very proud of all of you. Good luck in SAISA. LETS GO RAPTORS
History of the Boys' Volleyball at AISC: The first ever team at AISCH was formed during the 2008-2009 school year with GregoryHewett (6th grade teacher) and Jerry Smith (high school teacher) as coaches. No records kept for the season. In 2009-2010, the team with Mr. Gabriel as the new head coach and Mr. Smith as the assistant coach, traveled to New Delhi for the SAISA tournament and also competed in the local tournament. The season ended with a 4-15 record. The third year (2010-2011) was more successful. The team finished third at the local tournament and during the SAISA Tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh, defeated the defending champions, the New Delhi Falcons, 2 sets to one, with the third set going to 15-12 for the fighting Raptors. Although the win did not move the team over the standings, the experience gained by the players was very important. The season ended with a 4-14 record. Ms. Lira Caldwell (elementary teacher) was the assistant coach. The 2011-12 season was one of ups and downs. The team played 26 games and had a 8-18 record. Mr. David Fitzhugh (elem.P.E. teacher) was the asistant coach. Although we defeated the defending SAISA Champions the Karachi Knights (2 sets to 0) during the SAISA tournament in Lincoln School (Nepal), we didn't manage to put a winning string together and finished in 6th place out of 6 teams. However, the addition of a number of new players to the team creates a brighter look and a much stronger team for the future. The members of the 2011 Varsity Boys' Volleyball Team were: Aakash (grade 12), Shravan (11), Jun Ha (11), Forrest (10), Dong Su (10), Han Tae (10), Sanchit (10), Calder (9), Bryce (9) and Caleb (9).
The 2012 Varsity Boys' SAISA Team: Captain, Shravan Gunaseelan (senior), Forrest Nutter (co-captain), Sanchit Kumar, Liam Williamson,Matthew Scales,Arjun Nandkumar (juniors) and Calder Hoover, Bryce Finnegan, Dakota Kuhn,Avinash Kavindram and Kethan Reddy (sophomores). Five of this year's players were on the 2011 team (Shravan, Forrest, Sanchit, Calder and Bryce).
Latest scores: Our team has a 9-7 record, (as of September 26, 2012),with 25-16 sets and 882 points for and 735 against. Our game schedule calls for two games a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) with the AISCH Invitational (a five team tournament ) on September 14 and 15 with the final to be played on Tuesday, September 18. SAISA Volleyball 2012 will take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh from October 3-7, 2012.
The 2012 AISCH Invitational Tournament was a great success for our young Raptors. The team finished in second place out of 5 teams, losing only the first place team Anjugam (twice, once in the round robin and then in the final). Anjugam was the better team with outstanding hitters and playing strong defense. It was a great experience for our players to face such a complete team and see how the next level looks like in volleyball. This is the first time in the history of AISCH varsity boys' volleyball that the team played in a final at the Invitational. The team will have a few more friendly games until September 28 in preparation for the SAISA tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Great job Raptors!!!! The 2012 SAISA Volleyball Tournament was historic for the Raptors. By finishing 4th out of 10 teams the team became the first boys' team in the history of the school to make it to the medal round and get a shot at the championship game. The young Raptors finished with a 3-4 record, 7-10 sets and 319-340 points. The wins came over Colombo (2-0, 25-6,25-14), Murrey Christian School (2-0, 25-8, 25-8) and Bombay (2-1, 18-25, 25-22 and 15-9). We lost to Lincoln (0-2, 17-25,12-25), twice to Dhaka (in the round robin 0-2 10-25,18-25 and in the semifinal 0-2 9-25,19-25) and to last year's champions Lahore in the third place game( 1-3, 25-23,21-25,14-25 and 14-25). My congratulations to the players for a job well done.
2012 Team leaders are:Forrest with 205 serves in, Calder with 30 aces (team record), Shravan with 512 spikes in and 122 kills (both team records).
